You can get a reasonably accurate result from a home pregnancy test within a couple of weeks after you have had your fertility treatment but most clinics will provide this service. Please bear in mind that often when home pregnancy tests are carried out too soon after treatment, they can often indicate a false positive result.

If you are pregnant, you may start to notice other clues such as missing your period, feeling or being sick, sore breasts, wanting to go to the toilet more often, tiredness, sensitivity to strong tastes and smells, as well as mood swings.

Normally the fertility clinic will keep in contact with you when you become pregnant so they can carry out an ultrasound scan to ensure your baby’s development is healthy.

If your fertility treatment is successful, don’t be surprised if you are not as overjoyed as you expected to be as it can take time to adjust. Don’t worry if you have these feelings, many expectant mothers have them when they learn they are going to have a baby and it affects those that have had a natural pregnancy in equally with those who have used a fertility clinic.

There are some situations which may mean you need more scans or appointments at the hospital. Often this is because they have had previous problems with miscarriages, stillbirth, health problems or multiple births. An additional reason is when the expectant mother is more mature because as you get older the more likely it is that problems will occur.

It is not possible to say that they will not be any problems experienced in a pregnancy, whether it was assisted or not because they all carry some risk but most of the time these are only minor. It might be easier said and done but try to relax during the pregnancy and enjoy the time as much as possible.

It is a sad fact that the number of women who miscarry after having fertility treatment such as In Vitro Fertilization is slightly higher than those who become pregnant by the natural method. There are two main reasons for this, the first being that women that have fertility treatment have a pregnancy test quite early in the pregnancy.
